Fredricko is thriving in his new career!

Disability Employment Support

At the age of 38 and after 23 years working in the hospitality industry as a chef, Fredricko was looking for a change and, while he wasn’t quite sure what that change would be, after seeing an ad on Seek for a traineeship role in Disability Support Services with Far North Community Services, he applied.

Fredricko was successful for the role and started with the organisation, first as an entry level part time Support Worker and was then offered to start his traineeship, completing a Certificate IV Disability Services qualification.

After seven months, Fredricko impressed his employer so much that he was then promoted to team leader, responsible for a small team of support staff.

“Far North Community Services have been a great support, the organisation really invest in training up their staff, allowing work time for on-the-job training,” Fredricko stated.

“I didn’t realise how many transferrable skills I had from being a chef but heading up a team, time management and managing people, those skills are relevant. I’d encourage anyone looking to change careers to just jump in and do it – it may seem hard at first but the rewards are worth it. I love seeing the participants’ faces when we assist with their quality of living, it is really rewarding work, in fact it doesn’t even feel like work,” he further stated.

CEO for Far North Community Services, Kathy Hough stated, “Fred is a friendly face who everyone gets along with and always brings a positive attitude to work, he’s a valued member of the organisation. We believe in empowering our staff with on-the-job training and skills development so that they can better support our clients – it’s a win-win!”

Far North Community Services, a member of The Apprenticeship Community and registered with the NDIS, provide a range of services to support persons with disability and their families, in the Kimberley region of Western Australia.

After 23 years as a chef, Fredricko has changed careers into Disability Support, thanks to a Traineeship opportunity with Far North Community Services and The Apprenticeship Community.
